DoublePageSpreadMockUpOne

This is my first double page spread mock up, i have used an image of the black eyed peas to link the pages together, but i do need to improve and add more things to it.

ContentsMockUpFive

For my fifth mock up of a contents page i have used an image that i have took myself and used grey scale to make the photo look more stylish and sophisticated. Now that i have took my own images i can start getting closer and closer to my final product. Before this however, i will experiment more to get the best finish i can get.

ContentsMockUpFour

This contents mock up i have created is getting close to what i want my final contents page to look like. Obviously i will need to use a image from my own source, but the design looks good and in my opinion its aesthetically pleasing.

ContentsMockUpThree

In this contents page i have used a darker background to make it more aesthetically pleasing and I've used a symbol it the top corner to provide more information and make it look more professional.

ContentsMockUpTwo

This second contents page is completely different from the first one i did as i want to experiment as much as i can with different styles. The background seems to plain however, so i may change this on my next mock up.

ContentsMockUpOne

This is my first mock up to my final contents page. i need to add more information to it, but its a good start to a contents page. I have used an image of Ne-Yo sitting on a formal chair and deleted the background to give it a more professional finish. I think the grey background contrasts well with the black writing and chair that Ne-Yo is sitting in.

MockUpToFinalProductNine

In this cover i have used colour pictures instead of black and white to give it a more colourful and attractive look to the page. I am going to do a cover similar to this but may use something in the background of the main image as i think this will give the oage a better look.

MockUpToFinalProductEight

This is similar to the last mock up i created, but this time i have changed the font to give it a more eroded look to it and i have also put the artists name on the front of the magazine to show the audience who it is. This would bring attention towards it if it were in a shop.

MockUpToFinalProductSeven

This, my seventh front cover mock up, is very similar to the last one, except the main picture is different and i have changed font colour in places from black to white and from white to black. These are only small changes, but they make a big difference.

MockUpToFinalProductSix

This mock up, similar to the last one, now has a picture i have took myself and is look aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. I have also changed colours of text.

MockUpToFinalProductFive

This cover, my fifth mock up, is in my opinion very similar to what a professional magazine front cover would look like and is therefore getting closer to what i want my final piece to be like. I have used different fonts to previous mock ups and i have used the colour scheme of black, grey and white. The are not colourful colours by any means but they work together extremely well.

MockUpToFinalProductFour

This is my fourth mock up and i have decided to change the main picture to see the effect a different kind of image has behind the masthead and subheadings. I have also used a quote from Rihanna, "Lovin' life in the States" to give the cover a professional look to it. I have also used an issue number and price under the masthead which makes it look like it is a real magazine. This magazine in my opinion, looks good but may need some more subheadings around the picture.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

MockUpToFinalProductThree

In this cover i have added extra topics and subheadings around the page to add a border affect and i have also used a different font for "Rihanna's Top 10 Fashion Tips" to make it seem more personal to Rihanna herself. I have also moved some topics round the page and added a slight bit of red into the page to give it an aesthetically pleasing finish.

MockUpToFinalProductTwo

From the last of my mock ups, i have changed the colour scheme from black and white, to blue and green. Im not sure if it makes the page look more proffesional, but it definately makes the cover stand out more.

MockUpToFinalProduct

This is my first idea and layout of how my final magazine front cover could be. I like the picture i have used so i may try and use a similar picture for my final product. This cover needs more information and subheadings on it, but in my opinion its a good start.

Planning: PossibleMagazineNamesAndFeedback

After asking 20 people about which magazine name looked and sounded the best, this was the results.

UpBeat - 1

RiseToFame - 1

Collision - 5

Unplugged - 3

LiveMusic - 1

TheMusicArchive (TMA) - 9

9 people in the survey picked the name TheMusicArchive (TMA) as the best out of the 6 ideas. Therefore i will use this as my magazine name.

Planning: CameraShotIdeasForFrontCover

For my magazine main picture i am considering using a medium-long shot of a person to show what they're wearing and what they're doing. I will use a camera angle and shot similar to the one above, but with the model wearing casual clothes. With this type of picture it leaves room for the masthead in one of the top corners and it looks professional.

Planning: Price

The price of your magazine is vital to how many magazines you actually sell. I have researched magazine prices and they vary from a reasonable £0.99 to a rather expensive £4.99. The price varies usually on what comes in the magazine, such as free gifts and how thick the magazine is in general. Prices usually end in 99 pence because then it doesn't go to the next pound and it makes the price seem cheaper. Magazines usually base their price on how many copies they think they will sell because they need to break even and possibly make profit from them. I think that i will use a price around the £1.99 mark to make the magazine affordable and cheap for the target audience. This low price will ensure that i sell more copies of the magazine, and therefore it will get more popular through word of mouth.

Planning: TargetAudience

When creating a magazine, knowing the target audience for it is vital. You need to know this because your target audience will want different things than what target audiences of other magazines will want. Therefore i will need to use a suitable name of the magazine, fonts, colours and other aspects to attract them to the magazine.

The target audience for my R'n'B magazine will be young adults and teenagers. This means i need to make my magazine modern and aesthetically pleasing for the younger generation of people. 'Vibe' is the most popular R'n'B magazine at this current time so i will have a similar target audience to them. They prodominantly aim their magazine at young urban followers of the R'n'B/hiphop culture.

Planning: ColourSchemes

On the thought that i'm going to create an R'n'B magazine, these are the colours that i am thinking of using for my magazine:

(These colours will be used for things such as the masthead, sub-headings and banners).

>Black, Grey and White.

>Black, Grey and Red.

>Black, White and red.

>Blue, Yellow and White.

>Red and Black.

>Black and Pink.

> Black and Yellow

>Grey and Yellow

All these colour schemes work well with the colours that they are linked with and they are suitable for an R'n'B magazine.

Planning: GenreOf Magazine

The genre of music i am thinking of using for my magazine is R'n'B. This is not definate at this moment in time, because i am still uncertain about this type of music. A popular magazine which caters in R'n'B is Vibe magazine. The image above is a typical R'n'B magazine and uses different colour patterns on every new issue of the magazine.
Other possible music genres i could choose from are:
Rock
Indie
Heavy metal
Pop
Hardcore
Rap
Dance

Planning: FrontCoverLayoutTwo

This is my second Layout idea for my music magazine. This layout is slightly unconventional with where images are placed, but hopefully it also makes it more interesting. I may not choose to duplicate and use any of the layout ideas i have posted, but i may end up putting the ideas together and coming up with a layout that all people will like. Using this research as guidance, i will hopefully make my front cover more aesthetically pleasing.

Planning: FrontCoverLayoutOne

This is my first layout idea for my music magazine front cover. I've made it rather traditional and conventional as its my first one, and hopefully i will make the next layout idea more obsurd.

Preliminary Number Two

This is my contents prelim which has a border at the top of the page and an image of pupils which has kept its original background. I have split the word contents into 'con' and 'tents' to make it stand out more and to give the page a more modern style. I have used a font which has a rough nature to it and gives the page a different look to others out there.

Preliminary Number One

This is my first front cover for a school magazine and to be honest there is plenty of room for improvement. Using text and images, i tried to create a banner to border my main picture and i used red and black for the magazine masthead to blend in with the sixth forms colours and the tie that the student in the picture is wearing.
I placed the picture of the student looking at the masthead which works well in my opinion because it makes the magazine title seem important with the model looking at it.

Double Page Spread Research Five

This double page spread in my opinion works very well with its great layout. The quote written in bold font goes across both pages which supplies the link between both pages. They have used few and simple colours on the page to give the image that the magazine is simple and sophisticated. The magazine have made the page look dull around Lily Allen in a bright red top. This brings the attention to her and this suggests the magzine are proud to have such an established name in their magazine. They also highlight her name in red writing for the same effect.
The shot of Lily Allen is a medium close up to show what she is wearing but still be able to see her facial expressions. Overall i think that this double page spread is very good because the two pages link well and it would definately catch their target markets eye.

Double Page Spread Research Four

This double page spread from 'NME' is very colourful and bold, and it looks very professional. They've highlighted an important quote on the second page to make the text more noticeable. People are more likely to read an enlarged and colourful quote and 'NME' will be hoping that after the reader has read this, they will want to know what the rest of the small text says. It uses blue throughout the page to keep the simplicity and consistency of the page. The main picture represents the band's name (The teenagers), as its a mid-long shot of the band looking laid back in a typical teenagers bedroom. They have used posters on the wall in the background of the picture efficiently, as this is what teenagers have in their bedroom. The double page spread also has one page which is colourful and one which is white and plain, and these pages contrast well together.

Double page spread Research Three

This double page spread caught my attention straight away with all its bright pictures and bold text. It uses an interview feature down the left hand side and it also works well as a border to the main pictures. The main content of this double page spread is pictures so its more likely to attract atention than if it were mainly text. The main let down would be that the crease in the middle of the two pages would go through the head of a person in one onthe pictures. Although it is a very aesthetically pleasing spread with the bold text fonts and bright colours.

Double page spread Research Two

This magazine double page spread from 'NME' magazine is very traditional with one page including text and one with a large picture. They have picked out an important quote and enlarged it in the centre of the second page. They use this because they need something other than small text to grab peoples attention. It also looks aesthetically pleasing and very professional. This is a technique i may use when designing my magazine. They have used a camera shot of several people all spread out which is unconventional, yet interesting. Because the picture is so different to what other magazines have, it will drag people towards the picture because of curiosity.

Double page spread Research One

This magazine double page spread has a central picture of the Black Eyed Peas with the page split coming down through the middle of two people. They have made sure that this is like this so that they don't go through the head of one of the band members. If the page split does go through someones head it makes the magazine look rushed and unprofessional. When i come to the designing of my magazine i will make sure i know where the page split will be before deciding on where a picture will go. They have used a minimal amount of colours in there completed page spread and this makes it look simple and sophisticated. They have used arrows to start the text to give it a brighter and bolder look to the page. The picture used works very well and the lighting in the image is very good as you can see all the facial expressions on the peoples faces which is the most important thing in an image. I will make sure to take pictures for my magazine with the people in it, facing the light to get better views of their faces.

Contents Research Five

This contents page from 'Vibe' magazine is clearly out to grab the attention of men with a stunning picture of Ciara which is bordering the text on the page.
This contents page is very unconventional as you dont usually see an image like this whats on the page. Its also unusual because usually you see the celebritys head centrally and this time her bare legs are the main attention. This may be because the designers of the magazine think that this is the best way to attract the most attention to the page.
The word 'contents' is laid out over three seperate lines to give the impression to the reader that the magazine is different and unique. They also use and old style font on their headings to give the page a touch of class and style.

Contents Research Four

This contents page from 'Q' magazine is rather conventional and modern as they use similar techniques that other magazines use. This makes it conventional because this type of contents page is what we expect it to look like. It has a main picture of a band and it has writing at the bottom and down the left. It has the 'Q' logo at the top to make the reader know what their reading. The designer here is trying to make the reader think the magazine name is important. They use features down the left hand side and at the bottom to border the picture, and they also use a date at the top of the page to show that its a consistent magazine.

Contents Research Three

This is a contents page from 'Vibe' magazine which is considerably different to any other i have seen. This is an unconventional contents page because it has alot of things on there that you dont expect to see. There is a black and white picture which grabs your attention instantly because it is unusual to see black and white pictures in magazines of todays date. It is very simple with just the colours black and white along with a picture of a front cover in the corner. This makes it seem sophisticated and easy on the eye to the reader of the magazine.
The magazine designer has opted to use the word 'contents' at the top of the page on three seperate lines which makes the reader wonder why and make them ask the question. Its unconventional compared to other magazines but it works very well with the style of the contents page. This is a house style of 'Vibe' magazine and they want you to notice this and know that it is from their magzine. This is why they do it in all their magazines.
The headings on the page are in an old style, traditional font which adds style to the page,

Contents Research Two

This magazine contents from 'Clash' is different to all the other contents pages i have seen. This only uses two or three colours which makes it seem simple and sophisticated. The background of the page is a man and the top half of the page is focused on him as there is no writing at the top, only at the bottom. This would instantly grab your attention as it is different to other magazines and its irregular. Other magazines wouldn't use a house style like this one so it makes the pahe unique. This would bring readers in to read on because it looks so unique and different. In my opinion this the layout and colours together work really well and its a well thought up contents page.

Contents research One

This contents page from 'NME' magazine is extremely bright and colourful and attracts your attention instantly. The page uses sub-headings as borders to bring the attention to the centre of the page. They also use the same Logo at the top of the page to show people that the magazine name has importance. The logo is a striking red colour and is the most eyecatching text on the page, because of its size and colour. I think the colours on this contents page make it stand out as soon as you turn to this page and it invites the reader in. They use two shades of green in the centre of the page which works brilliantly as its very aesthetically pleasing.

Magazine Cover Research Five

This magazine is an edition of 'NME' which stands out extremely well with a large main picture of Gwen Stefani on the front. Her head goes of the masthead which suggests that 'NME' want her to be noticed and that shes the most important thing on the cover. Her name is in a white and gold colour and it is right through the middle of the page. This is by far the largest text on the page including the masthead, which shows that 'NME' magazine want her to be noticed.
There is only four or five colours on the cover and it is made very simple to give the impression to their audience that is a very sophisticated magazine.

magazine cover Research Four

This magazine from 'NME' is very bold and bright and catches your attention straight away. Although colour is needed on the creation of my own magazine front cover, i have learnt that it is best used in moderation to make it look professional and sophisticated.
This magazine cover looks very modern and would attract most young people to it. The masthead (NME) is very big and its the colour red to make it stand out. The masthead is also in front of La Roux on the front which suggests the designer believes nothing is more important than the magazine. There is a close-up shot of La Roux on the front with her hair behind the 'NME' logo. The important factor here is that her eyes are showing because that's the thing people are instantly drawn towards. Her eyes are the only thing on her face with any colour to draw people into her eyes.
The only writing on the page that is in yellow is the quotes "the future 50" and "special issue", which suggests these are the main things on the page apart from La Roux and the masthead, that the designers want you to see. The yellow writing and black background contrast with each other for a eye catching effect.

magazine cover Research Three

This magazine caught my eye on the Internet as i think it looks very professional and sophisticated. The shortage of colours on the cover make it very simple to look at and very suave.

T.I. is the main image on the cover and he goes over the masthead of vibe which shows hes the most important thing on the page. His name is also as big as the writing the magazine title is in and in a different colour to make it stand out. This shows the magazine is promoting T.I. and that they want people to notice him on their cover.
The designer of the cover has used writing around T.I., who is wearing a smart suit to bring attention, because they want people to otice him instantly when they see the magzine.

magazine cover Research Two

The magazine cover which i have chosen to analyse for my second piece of research is 'vibe'. This cover shows a close up image of Kanye West and his head goes over the main title (Vibe) which suggests Kanye West is the most important thing on the cover. All the writing is around Kanye West and he is by far the biggest thing on the cover. Therefore they are portraying him to be important and successful to the readers of the magazine.
The blue and pink colours on the cover contrast with each otherand makes the cover look very modern and professional. With there only being around 3 or 4 colours on the cover, it makes the magazine simple on the eye and very aesthetically pleasing.

magazine cover Research One

The music magazine i have chosen to use for my first piece of research is Q magazine. The reason i have chosen this is because its a popular magazine to music lovers and its good to analyse. The Name of the magazine is in bright and bold writing to make it stand out and to make sure people know the name of the magazine. The masthead takes up alot of the page, which suggests they want people to know and recognise the Q magazine logo. The picture of Lily Allen on the cover instantly attracts attention as she has her back to the audience and is topless. The picture of Lily Allen and the animals relates to the tag line 'Sexy beast' as she is topless in the shoot and she is standing in a long shot next to two beasts. They have wrote Lily Allen in black and white to contrast the colours and make it stand out over other magazines.

The designer of the magazine has used only 5 colours on the front cover to get the message across to the audience that it is a suave and sophisticated magazine. They have used red, just like they have for their masthead, for the word 'exclusive' so that it catches peoples eye.

My introduction.

My name is Liam Pryor, and this is my media studies blog which i will post comments in every now and then to help me when i come to produce my own music magazine. I will be evaluating different kinds of music magazine front covers, contents pages and double page spreads over the period of the project. I will also post comments about anything else that may help me with my project.
